Finding the right hiking shoes
One of the things that you are going to have to have if you go hiking is a pair of shoes. In some cases it may be possible to do a hike with a regular pair of running shoes. However on all but the easiest of terrain you will find that you want a little bit more support. This is why most people go with a pair of hiking shoes.
The first thing that you will have to do when you are choosing hiking shoe is to determine just what kind of hiking you are planning to do. Your needs are going to be very different if you are planning a long distance trek than they will be for a day hike on a well travelled path. In general if you are just going to be doing day hikes you will be fine with a pair of lightweight hiking shoes. However for the more serious trekker you will almost certainly need a pair of hiking boots.
The next thing that you have to make sure of when you are choosing hiking shoes is that they are comfortable. This is something that is absolutely critical. You are going to be spending a considerable amount of time walking the shoes so you have to make sure that you can do some comfortably. You are going to want to try on several pairs before you make your final selection. Do not just choose a pair because you read somewhere that they were the best brand, they have to fit your feet comfortably or your hike is going to be very unpleasant.
When you are choosing a pair of hiking shoes you are going to want to make sure that they are lightweight if you can. This will be much easier to do for shoes that you intend to use of for day hikes. For a serious trek you will a fairly beefy pair of boots. Lightweight shoes will be much easier to walk in so if they offer adequate support they are probably the best option. Other things that you are going t want to look at when you are choosing hiking shoes is that they are water proof and that they breathe. Although getting a pair of shoes that can do both can be a challenge.
Whatever pair of hiking shoes you choose make sure that before you actually use them on a hike that you break them in properly. The first few days of wearing a new pair of shoes are likely to cause blisters, not something that you are going to want while you are out hiking. Take a few days and wear your new shoes before you set out on a hike. This should be enough to break them in and make sure that you don't get any blisters while you are out on the trail.
